Description
The Circadian Rhythm plays a very important role in human health. Most people know that it has to do with your sleep-wake cycle, regulating hormones such as melatonin and cortisol, and making you feel either sleepy or energized at certain times. However, as research unfolds, it seems the Circadian Rhythm regulates much more than just those two hormones, but also influences a lot of other bodily processes such as digestion, body temperature, and other hormones.
When we mess with this Rhythm, it can really throw our system out of sync. Just imagine different body parts and systems trying to work together, following a clock to know when to do what task, but all of their clocks show a different time. Chaos ensues.
Light is perhaps the most important influence on regulating the Circadian Rhythm. Humans evolved mostly under the sun, or in the evening with a fire, which gives off mostly red and orange light at a fairly low light intensity. It is only since we invented TV screens that we are staring at bright blue light, also long after the sun has gone down.
As studies have shown, light after sundown will suppress melatonin, an important hormone in regulating your sleep and part of the mechanisms involved in the Circadian Rhythm. Blue light is especially effective in doing so, as shown in this study.
This is where Blue Blocking Glasses come into play. These glasses will filter out the colors of light that are most harmful to your sleep and Circadian Rhythm.
You can wear these after sunset, to protect yourself against bright sources of blue light from your phone, computer, or other screens and light sources.
As a result, you will sleep better, and not disturb the Circadian Rhythm, which is such a vital part of your health.
