Description
Glycine is a protein that is found mostly in collagen rich meat, such as skin-on meat, meat from the bone, or tough cuts of meat with lots of ligaments. It has a number of important benefits:
- Improves production of collagen (great for the skin and joints)
- Functions as a calming neurotransmitter, similar to GABA (anti-anxiety)
- Has been shown to improve sleep
- Is required by the body to produce creatine, glutathione (a powerful antioxidant), and bile salts (necessary for digestion).
- Can induce a significant increase in growth hormone
I go more in depth in this article (you can also find the scientific sources there).
The body can synthesize some Glycine by itself, but not enough. It is hypothesized in the literature that the body needs about 15 grams / day, but synthesizes about 2.5 grams / day.
Given that people barely eat collagen rich foods, supplementation can be very helpful.
